Here is another installment of Safe Harbor, The Movie Part 8 of 10 “Safe Harbor” is a sound film with a solid cast. Treat Williams and Nancy Travis star as Doug and Robbie Smith, a well-to-do couple about to embark on their long-planned retirement boating trip, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. It isn’t the stock market that has robbed them of their vacation plans, but rather a family friend, Judge Roberts (Orson Bean), desperate to save a couple of juvenile cases from adult lock up. The judge asks the couple to host Luke (Reiley McClendon) and David (“Frozen River’s” Charlie McDermott) on their houseboat until room opens up for the kids at the juvenile-detention facility. The boys’ infractions are relatively minor and lock-up in an adult facility would prove disastrous. Robbie and Doug reluctantly agree, and a third boy, Billy (Sam Jones III), is delivered as well. Without any kind of plan or handbook, Doug puts his merchant marine experience to work and has the boys swabbing the deck and learning to sail. Luke is a slacker, but is soon motivated to impress the local girls with his newfound harbor skills while Billy’s just content to have a safe place to stay after years of abuse. David is fairly agreeable, but, after his mother’s drunken visit to the marina, he lashes out and destroys property. The wealthy marina community is none too happy to have delinquents in their midst, and social services, alerted by David’s mother, complain of inadequate lodging …

(Film from Iran) Filmed in a womans restroom located in a public park in Irans metropolitan center of Tehran, this documentary explodes Western stereotyping of women in Iran. The elder who runs the washroom offers a shoulder to cry on or tough love in a place where women—many of them especially marginalized because they are prostitutes, addicts or runaways—feel safe enough to remove their veils, and draw on cigarettes and their opinions on a wide range of subjects that men cannot hear them speaking about: sex, family abuse, relationships, drugs, religion, self-mutilation. The director (and admired actress) supplies the audience with an unflinching, detailed examination of the lives of the women who use the restroom as a gathering place. Mary Kerr, Programming Director of Silverdocs, highly praises the way private conversations establish community: Never before have I been so surprised by a film’s candor and honesty. The Ladies’ is an amazing testament to Mahnaz Afzali’s restraint as a filmmaker as she steps into the background and lets these women, who are second-class citizens in Iran, be themselves—totally unrestrained and surprisingly progressive. Myself, Ri, and two randoms. I don’t know why I bother to play games like that because when you get hosed it’s frustrating. Anyway one of them shoots out the glass before we’re all ready, and we’re in pretty rough shape to begin with. For once the director is quite nice to me with regards to hordes once I get to the alarm room (this NEVER happens) and when I rush to the safe room secure in the knowledge that the jockey is stuck behind doors and the spitter can’t slow me down, I even have time to go back and grab a pipe bomb when Ri points out there’s one behind me. Hunter at the end frightened me a little.
